About Hearth Roast
A pushing puzzle at a tavern hearth. The cook shoves skewered sausages over glowing coals: pushed across its length a sausage rolls and shows its other side, pushed along it slides and keeps the same side down. Every side must touch the coals once and only once.
Every hearth is fixed, with a par found by search. The eight inns teach one idea at a time, from the kitchen hearth through cellar gratings, long links and greased flags to the lord's table.
How to play
- Goal
- Push the sausages over the coals until every side of every sausage is browned exactly once.
- How it ends
- A hearth is done the moment the last side browns; a side that touches the coals twice burns, and a sausage that falls through a grating is lost, so either sends you back with Undo or Restart: a hearth cannot be lost for good.
- Record
- Each hearth keeps the fewest moves and the fastest time to roast it, a top ten of each.
- Walk with the arrow keys or WASD, the step pad, a swipe, or a tap beside the cook. Walking into a sausage pushes it and everything in front of it; sausages cannot be pulled.
- Pushed across its length a sausage rolls, so its other side comes up; pushed along its length it slides and keeps the same side down. The rim along its lower or right edge shows the underside: pink is raw, brown is done, black is burnt.
- A side that touches the coals a second time burns. A sausage lying wholly over cellar gratings drops through, and one pushed wholly onto greased slabs slides until something stops it. The cook never steps on coals or gratings.
- Undo takes back a move and Restart lays the hearth out again (Undo brings your line back); neither stops the clock. Pausing takes that run out of the Top 10.
