Mahjong

Thirty tables of wardstones, and every deal can be cleared.

MahjongPuzzle, Board & Cards

About Mahjong

Mahjong solitaire, on a warden's counting table. The stones are wardstones recovered from the Sundering and laid out to be read: thirty-six carved wards, four of each, stacked five deep. Take two that carry the same ward and they lift off together. Clear the table and the filing is done.

A stone can only be taken when nothing rests on it and one of its long sides is clear, so the game is a question of order, not of finding. Each ward has four copies, which means every pair is a choice between two pairings — and the wrong one buries the copy that was holding your way through.

Every deal here can be cleared, and that is not a promise, it is how the deal is made. The table is built backwards from a finish and then replayed through the rules to prove it empties, before you ever see it. That is why there is no shuffle button: a shuffle is only ever an apology for a board that should not have been dealt. Undo is free and unlimited instead.

Thirty tables, from a thirty-six-stone cairn to the hundred-and-forty-four-stone Shell, each with a best time to beat and a difficulty somebody actually measured. There is a new table every day, and a fresh deal on any layout whenever you want one.

How to play

  1. Take two stones carrying the same ward. Pick one and every stone that would match it glows.
  2. A stone can be taken when nothing is on top of it and its left or right side is clear — covered stones are dimmed.
  3. Run out of moves? Undo. It is free, it is unlimited, and the way through is still there.

A best time is kept for each table and for each day's table. Asking for a hint takes that run off the clock; undo does not. Progress and settings are saved in this browser.
