About Instrument Arena

Six competitions use individually reviewed photographs and solo recordings of musical instruments. Name an instrument from its photograph or its sound, find it by searching names, say what vibrates to make its sound, place it in a musical tradition, or match ten photographs with their names. Worldwide score, time and player name lead the main menu.

The library holds 200 photographed instruments, 31 also heard in solo clips from the University of Iowa Electronic Music Studios, the Philharmonia Orchestra and Wikimedia Commons. Instrument Families covers 59 instruments sorted by what vibrates (body, membrane, strings, air or electronics), and Traditions 33 instruments with documented cultural associations. A Familiar collection offers 31 well-known instruments in Photo Recognition, Name Search and Matching Table.

How to play

Goal
Recognize musical instruments by sight and sound and learn their names, families and traditions.
How it ends
Finish ten questions or ten pairs; Photo Recognition ends when its 90-second clock expires or an answer is wrong.
Record
Each competition and collection keeps its best score and time, with the player's name, plus this browser's personal best.
  1. Photo Recognition: choose the pictured instrument from eight names. You have 90 continuously running seconds; one wrong answer ends the run. Most correct answers wins, with time breaking ties.
  2. Sound Recognition: ten solo clips. Press Play, replay freely, then choose the instrument from eight names. Listen for at least a moment before answering; buffering does not count as answering time. Most correct answers wins, then the faster time.
  3. Name Search: identify ten photographs. Type part of a name, then choose the instrument from the filtered list, or choose I don't know to reveal it. A wrong answer scores zero and play continues.
  4. Instrument Families: for ten instruments, shown by name only without a photo, choose what vibrates to make the sound. A keyboard is not a family: a piano is a stringed instrument.
  5. Traditions: for ten instruments, choose a musical tradition the instrument is documented in. Any documented tradition earns the point; it is not a claim of invention.
  6. Matching Table: match ten photographs to their names, in either order. Each wrong pair adds three seconds; fastest adjusted finish wins.

Good to know

Every photograph and recording retains its creator or performer, licence and source credit, shown after each answer and under Sources & credits. Leaving a run, opening help or reloading makes it practice; saved bests remain.
