How to play
- Goal
- Place two-cell bedrolls around one connected dark floor, matching every numbered pillar's neighbouring square pillows.
- How it ends
- The chart finishes when every cell is a pillar, bedroll or floor and all rules agree; marks can be changed, so there is no loss state.
- Record
- The fastest uninterrupted first solve of each chart is kept with its holder's name; replay is practice.
- Each bed occupies two neighbouring cells: one square pillow and one round foot. Horizontal beds may point either way; vertical pillows sit below their feet.
- A number counts square pillows in its four side neighbours. Blank pillars have no quota. Pillars cannot hold beds or connect floor.
- Each bed touches at least one floor cell across either half. All floor connects through sides, without a solid 2×2 floor patch.
- Selection alone makes no mark. Choose a bed direction, Floor or Erase; the chart finishes when every free cell and every rule agree.

Tips for Shugaku
- Start with tight clues A pillar with as many required pillows as available neighbours fixes those pillow positions.
- Check direction A pillow can have its foot above, left or right. A foot below a pillow is forbidden.
- Protect floor access A bed may touch other beds, but it still needs a side beside floor. Either half can supply access.
- Keep one corridor Diagonal floor contacts do not connect. Avoid separating a pocket or shading a solid 2×2 patch.
Questions about this game
Does a blank pillar count anything?
No. It occupies a fixed cell but has no pillow quota.
Does a bed need floor beside both halves?
No. Floor beside either half is sufficient.
Can beds touch each other?
Yes, provided every bed still has floor access.
Can floor branch?
Yes. It must connect through sides and contain no solid 2×2 patch.
Can cells stay undecided?
No. Every non-pillar cell must be floor or part of a complete bed.
Can Replay replace my first time?
No. Practice keeps your first time; its marks and Undo are saved separately from that result.
Pillars are neither beds nor floor. Vertical pillows must be below their feet. Every free cell needs an explicit mark. Practice progress and Undo survive reload; your first time stays unchanged.

About Shugaku
