About Hex

Build an unbroken chain between your two matching edges while blocking the computer’s connection. Every stone stays where you put it, so a small threat can become a route across the board.

Choose Learner or Careful for a full match, or tackle 3,293 endgame Trials. Each Trial has one winning next move, then asks you to finish the connection.

How to play

Goal
Join your two matching edges with one unbroken chain of your stones.
How it ends
A match or Trial ends when either player connects their edges.
Record
Keep your fastest wins and fewest placed stones against each opponent, and your first complete-win time for each Trial.
  1. Your color connects its two matching edges. Touching stones join along any shared hex side.
  2. Select an empty hex, then press Place. Tap the same selected hex again to confirm instead. The opponent then takes its turn.
  3. Stones never move or capture. The first continuous chain between matching edges wins; Hex cannot draw.
  4. In a full match, the second player may Swap immediately after the first stone. This exchanges colors and edge goals instead of placing a stone.
  5. In Trials, find the winning next placement and complete the connection against the opponent. All Trials are open from the start.
  6. Trial time records use your first complete unaided sitting. Restarted, paused or resumed attempts remain playable as Practice.

Good to know

Progress and personal bests stay in this browser. Rules and Settings keep a ranked clock running. Manual pause, restart and a resumed sitting become Practice.
