How to play
- Goal
- Divide every cell into connected rooms, each containing one number, so the number equals the room’s perimeter in cell sides.
- How it ends
- The chart finishes when every room contains one clue and its perimeter matches; there is no loss state.
- Record
- Each chart keeps your first solve time, and an uninterrupted first solve can claim the named fastest time.
- Draw borders between neighbouring cells to divide every cell into connected rooms. Each room must contain exactly one printed number.
- A number counts the unit cell sides around its room. Count sides on the outside of the grid, as well as sides shared with another room.
- A shared wall contributes one side to each adjacent room. Sides between cells inside the same room count zero. Corner contact does not connect cells.
- Select a cell to inspect its whole current room and every counted perimeter side in blue. These counts describe your own borders. Room areas may differ and shapes may be irregular.
Controls
| Mouse / touch | Tap two neighbouring cells to toggle their shared border; drag consecutive cells to draw one undoable stroke |
|---|---|
| Arrows + Enter / Space | Move cell focus and select neighbouring cells |
| Delete / Clear | Remove borders touching the selected cell |
| Z / Y / N | Undo / Redo / open Restart confirmation |
| Whole chart / Show rows or columns | Read-only overview / pan a clipped chart |
| Escape | Close a dialog, cancel a stroke, clear selection or return to the atlas |
| Controller | D-pad move; A select; X clear; shoulders Undo/Redo; B cancel or back; Start settings |
Tips for Knossos
- Count enclosing sides Walk around the entire room, including the grid exterior. A straight boundary of three cell sides counts three.
- Separate the anchors Each room needs exactly one number. Walls that still connect around their ends do not divide rooms.
- Distinguish area from perimeter A four-cell L and a five-cell rectangle can both have perimeter ten. Count boundary sides rather than cells.
Questions about this game
Must rooms be rectangles?
No. Any orthogonally connected shape is allowed if it contains one clue and has the required perimeter.
Does the grid exterior count?
Yes. Every exposed unit cell side contributes to the perimeter, including an inner boundary around an enclosed different room.
When do red clue counts appear?
When the grid already forms connected rooms with one clue each; incomplete components remain neutral because adding cells can reduce perimeter.
Are shelves difficulty levels?
The four shelves describe chart size: twenty-four charts each at 4×4, 5×4, 5×5 and 6×6. No difficulty ranking is promised.
Does Restart reset the clock?
No. It clears borders and keeps the original first-solve clock. Undo restores the cleared borders.
Where is Practice?
Choose Practice after a finish, or open a completed chart from the atlas. Practice is untimed and preserves your first finish. Reloaded unfinished attempts stay local while borders and Undo are retained.
Charts and the worked example are original. Borders and Undo save in this browser. The first clock starts when a chart is selected. Reloaded attempts and detected clock or browser-suspension discontinuities stay local. Unsafe or unavailable storage is reported in-game. This is an independent implementation of the classic Knossos puzzle rules.
