About Word Hunt

The letter-grid word game, on the survey sheets of a fantasy map-makers' commission. Each map lays out its ivory letter-stones in the shape of a place: a square well, a long bridge, a crossroads, a ring around a hole, a crown, a star. Stones touch side by side and corner to corner, and holes break the touch.

Drag through touching stones to spell a word, or tap them one by one, or just type. Each stone once per word; longer words are worth far more. When the hourglass runs out, the sheet shows every common word you missed and the longest one it held.

Fifteen maps in three difficulties (Apprentice words of 3 letters, Journeyman 4, Master 5), thirty boards on each from generous to sparse, three daily hunts that are the same for everyone, and Wander, a fresh board on any map every time. The Ten keep the best scores of each board, and the site re-traces every word before a hunt is ranked.

How to play

Goal
Find as many words as you can by tracing touching letter-stones before the sand runs out.
How it ends
A hunt ends when the hourglass is empty or you end it; it cannot be lost.
Record
The ten best scores on each board, with their holders' names; only your first hunt of a board counts, and every Wander hunt does.

  2. Stones touch sideways and at the corners; a hole in the map breaks the touch, and each stone counts once per word.

Word lists from SCOWL (Kevin Atkinson) and 12dicts (Alan Beale). Every board is rolled from our own dice by a seeded generator, and the records worker re-traces every word of a hunt on its board before it enters the Ten. Your hunts stay in this browser under morass.word-hunt.v1. No ads or analytics run inside the game.
