About Burning Library

A great library of Orenvalt is burning. Its bookcases hold small leather books, each stamped with a letter, and among them sit gilded tomes worth saving. Drag a chain through books that touch to spell a word: the books fly off the shelf, the ones above drop, new ones slide in, and any tome in your word is carried out.

After every word the fire climbs one book higher. Put it out by spelling through burning books, smother whole columns with ink, and plan around lanterns, falling cinders and stone bookends across ten halls. Every shelf keeps a top ten for score and for the fastest rescue.

How to play

Goal
Link neighbouring letters into words and use every gilded tome in a word before the fire climbs up to it.
How it ends
The shelf ends when its words run out or a tome burns; it is passed if every tome was saved.
Record
For every shelf, the ten best scores and the ten fastest times to save every tome, each checked by replaying the run.
  1. Drag through books that touch, sideways, up, down or diagonally, and lift to read the word; or tap the books one by one and press Send. On a keyboard, type the word: the shelf lights a chain that spells it, Tab picks another, Enter sends. Words are three to eight letters, each book used once a word.
  2. Use every gilded tome in a word before the shelf's words run out to pass it. After every word each flame climbs to the book above it, and a tome that catches fire burns and ends the shelf. Books about to catch glow, and while you spell, the shelf shows where the fire will be after that word.
  3. A burning book used in a word is put out. Later halls add gilded books that double a word, ink pots that put out a whole column, lanterns that keep lighting the book above them, cinders that fall where a marker shows, and stone bookends that block the fire until a word beside them cracks them. Reshelve mixes the plain books for one word; Hint shows a word for fifty points, three times a shelf.

Good to know

Only your first try at a shelf is sent to the records, and ranked runs are checked by playing them again. The Gentle fire in Settings climbs after every second word, for young readers, as practice. Your progress stays in this browser.
