About Cryptogram

Decode a quotation one letter at a time. Every occurrence of a cipher symbol changes together, so a promising short word can open up the whole sentence.

Choose from 60 quotations from Jane Austen and Lewis Carroll. Try substitutions freely, revise your guesses, and reveal a letter when you need a nudge. The author and work appear when you finish.

How to play

Goal
Decode the quotation by replacing each cipher letter with its original letter.
How it ends
Complete every letter to finish; wrong guesses can be changed, so a puzzle cannot be lost.
Record
Your first solve keeps its time and the number of letters revealed by hints.
  1. Choose a quotation or Daily. Each cipher letter always stands for the same original letter; different cipher letters stand for different letters. Spaces, punctuation and two starting letters are given.
  2. Select a cipher symbol, then tap or type its replacement. Every matching symbol changes together. Assigning a letter already used by another guess transfers it; fixed starting clues and hinted letters remain protected.
  3. Use Erase to clear a guess. Hint reveals every occurrence of the selected symbol and adds one to Letters revealed. Restart clears guesses but keeps hints and the original clock.
  4. Complete the original quotation to finish. Your first solve fixes both records. Daily shares its quotation and first result with the library; it cycles through all 60 quotations without repeating within the cycle.

Tips

  • Start with a pattern Look for repeated symbols and one-letter words. Try a likely short word, then check whether its letters make sense elsewhere.
  • Keep guesses provisional A familiar word is a hypothesis. Revise it if the same substitutions make another part of the sentence unlikely.

Good to know

Progress stays in this browser. The clock keeps running through menus and restarts. Reload preserves progress but makes the attempt local practice. Hints stay counted after Restart. Only the first solve can set either record. Quotations are original English excerpts from Pride and Prejudice, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

Questions

Does any meaningful sentence count?

The accepted answer is the quotation’s original wording. You can change guesses freely until every letter matches; the game does not claim that no other English sentence could fit the pattern.

Is Daily an extra quotation?

Daily chooses one of the 60 library quotations. It shares that quotation’s progress and first result, so opening it again does not create a fresh record.
