How to play
- Goal
- Place digits 1 through 9 once across the chart and reach every row and column target, applying the operations in reading order.
- How it ends
- The chart finishes when all nine digits appear once and all six equations obey the arithmetic rules and reach their targets. Entries can be erased or undone.
- Record
- Your first unassisted finish keeps its time for this chart; later plays are Practice.
- Use digits 1 through 9 exactly once across the whole three-by-three chart.
- Read rows left to right and columns top to bottom. Apply the first operation, then the second; ordinary operator precedence does not apply.
- Every intermediate result must be a nonnegative whole number. Multiplication or division by a right-hand 1 is forbidden; an initial 1 is allowed. Zero is a legal result.
- Select a square, then tap a digit. Repeating it clears it. Given digits are fixed. Erase, Undo and Redo remain available.
- Red outlines identify entered duplicates, illegal arithmetic prefixes or completed equations that miss their targets. A green tick confirms only that equation; finish all six while using every digit once.
Controls
| Mouse / touch | Select a square, then enter a digit |
|---|---|
| Arrows + Enter / Space | Move grid focus and apply the selected digit |
| 1–9 | Enter a digit on the focused grid cell |
| Delete / Backspace | Erase the focused grid cell |
| Z / Y / R | Undo / Redo / Restart confirmation |
| Escape | Close a dialog or return to the atlas |
Tips for MathemaGrids
- Work backward If a row ends with subtraction after multiplication, undo the subtraction first, then divide.
- Track the whole chart A digit used in any square is unavailable everywhere else, even in another row and column.
- Cross the equations A candidate fitting one target must also fit its crossing equation and the unused digits.
Questions about this game
Does multiplication happen before addition?
No. Read the displayed operations in order: (2 + 6) × 3 is 24.
Can an intermediate be a fraction or negative?
No. Each intermediate must be a nonnegative whole number, even if a later operation would make the final result legal.
What does a green tick mean?
That one filled equation matches. The whole chart still needs all digits once and all six targets.
What happens when I replay?
Replay is Practice and preserves your first finish time. Reloaded first attempts remain local while progress and Undo are retained.
All charts and worked diagrams are original. Progress and Undo save in this browser. Reloaded first finishes and detected clock or browser-suspension discontinuities remain local. Unsafe or unavailable storage is reported in-game. Classic MathemaGrids rules are described by BrainBashers; this is an independent implementation.
