About From 1 to X

Fill each outlined region with one through its size, exactly once. Balance the outside row and column totals, and keep equal numbers from sharing an edge.

All 96 charts are original, with 24 each at four by four through seven by seven. Every chart can be solved through local deductions; all four sizes are open from the start.

How to play

Goal
Fill each region with the numbers from one to its size, once each, and match every shown row and column sum.
How it ends
Finish when all cells are filled and equal numbers never share an edge; mistakes can always be undone.
Record
Your fastest first unaided solve is kept for each chart; the clock starts when it opens and never pauses.
  1. A region with n cells uses 1 through n once each. A single-cell region contains 1. Fixed givens stay in place.
  2. Outside clues add every cell in the complete row or column, including givens. Match all shown totals.
  3. Equal numbers cannot share a horizontal or vertical edge, even across region borders. Diagonal equals are legal; separated numbers may repeat along a row or column.
  4. Select a cell, then choose a number. Notes toggles optional pencil marks in empty cells; entering ink clears the cell’s notes.
  5. Undo and Redo reverse a whole action. Erase clears the selected editable cell. Pan moves an oversized chart; Whole chart gives a read-only overview.
  6. Restart keeps the first clock running. Your first finish is preserved, and later replays are Practice.

Tips

  • Count the whole set An n-cell region always adds to n × (n + 1) ÷ 2. Subtract a complete region from a line total when it lies within that line.
  • Check touching edges A number may fit a sum but still match an immediate neighbour. Diagonal matching numbers are allowed.
  • Use a remaining total Subtract the known numbers from a line clue, then compare the remaining cells with their regions.

Good to know

Entries, pencil notes and Undo save in this browser. The first clock starts when the chart opens and never pauses. Reloaded attempts stay local; Practice preserves the first finish.

Questions

Must rows use different numbers?

No. A row or column may repeat a number if equal copies do not share an edge.

Are equal diagonals forbidden?

No. Only horizontal and vertical touching equals are forbidden.

Does a given count toward the total?

Yes. Every outside clue includes the entire line and all fixed givens.

Are pencil marks required?

No. They are optional notes and do not count toward completion.

Does Restart reset the clock?

No. The first clock keeps running. Later Practice finishes cannot replace your first finish.
