Usually heard from Halvik Storn (one matter at a time, while no other case is open), or Greta Morl (“Ask Greta what she keeps telling them”). You need not wait for it: a case enters your casebook as soon as you hold one of its facts.

Gather the proof

1. Take the Clerk Tally, Entry Marks and Torn Pages in Dreskmark Bond-House.
   Finding Tearing Targeted: “Only the bond-ledger's entries for the missing lot were cut out, clean, the rest of the book whole — a surgeon's excision, not a wrecker's spite.”
   Finding Tolm Took And Tore: “The night-roll names one man over both strongbox and ledger-stand — the bond-clerk Corin Tolm, deep in debt the missing lot would have cleared.”
   Lead Read As Two: “The quay counts two crimes that night — a thief at the strongbox and a vandal at the torn ledger — and hunts two separate hands for them.”
2. Talk to Greta Morl in Dreskmark Bond-House and choose “Show Morl the entry-marks”.
   Finding Single Intrusion: “One keyed entry, one hour — the dust ran a single track from strongbox to ledger-stand and out, the work of one hand, not two crimes.”

Keep the order: a topic only appears once you hold the lead or the item it needs.

The trap

• Prew Quarreled makes a wrong sheet presentable (Culprit: Haldane Prew, Tell: Two Separate Crimes, Motive: Spite Grudge). “Haldane Prew has a loud grudge against the bond-house over that ledger-book — the open mouth that makes him the town's easy pick for the wrecking.”

Close the case

Stand beside Halvik Storn and present. When the sheet holds, Halvik Storn offers courses; the case closes, and The Double Unmasked unlocks, once you commit to one.
