Usually heard from Tovic Hald (“Ask Tovic what will not prove out”), or Halvik Storn (one matter at a time, while no other case is open). You need not wait for it: a case enters your casebook as soon as you hold one of its facts.

Gather the proof

1. Take the Custody Log in Dreskmark Physic-Stall.
   Finding Swap Needed Custody: “The swap wanted a furnace, the Concord die, and quiet unwatched hours — none of which rides a barge in daylight; all of which sat where the chest lay nineteen days in the warden's sole keeping.”
   Lead Roon Named: “The warden Corman Vasse lays the matter on the bargeman Pelle Roon, who lightered the chest last — a man with rough hands and a thin purse.”
2. Take the Chest Seal in Dreskmark Physic-Stall.
   Finding Seal Die Rematched: “Under the glass the Concord seal shows two pressings — a faint older rim and a fresh strike laid askew over it — so the chest was opened after its first closure and resealed with the same die.”
3. Take the Assay Streak in Dreskmark Physic-Stall.
   Needed before Tovic Hald: “Show Hald the ingot”.
4. Talk to Tovic Hald in Dreskmark Physic-Stall and choose “Show Hald the ingot”.
   Finding Ingots Are Base: “Tovic Hald's touchstone streaks the chest's silver grey and the acid bites it black — base metal washed to pass an eye, a likeness laid where the true silver was.”

Keep the order: a topic only appears once you hold the lead or the item it needs.

• Roon Carried The Chest makes a wrong sheet presentable (Culprit: Pelle Roon, Method: Swap On The Water). “By the custody account the bargeman Pelle Roon handled the chest last, lightering it across open water before it passed into the warden's keeping.”
• Nothing Missing Proof makes a wrong sheet presentable (Tell: All Present Nothing Missing). “By count, seal, and receipt nothing is missing — every ingot present, the Concord seal unbroken — which is exactly why no theft was ever looked for.”
