The Bride and the Widow

The eighth trial, on a split screen: Bouquet and Wreath, Flower Petals and Mourning Charge, First Dance, Visitors and the Grooms.

Eighth trial · 6,000 health, shared by both. The screen is split: the bride's candle-lit chapel on the left, her widowed self's grey one on the right. Your hero stands in both halves at once and every cast you make is cast again in the other half: it damages each twin it reaches, so a cast that reaches both takes its damage twice from the pool, and one that reaches only one twin counts for her alone. Each half warns only of its own twin's spells, so read both. A new ability joins at 100, 80, 60, 40 and 20% health and none ever leaves.

The Bride and the Widow: a full fight, narrated

In the film: a female Ironsworn wins in 2:28 after the pull without taking a single hit, finishing on 100 of 100 health. The cards after the win are Float Like a Butterfly (on this boss the no-damage tick is called Not a Hair Out of Place) and Ironclad, the Ironsworn's class ladder. It earns neither challenge: six of her casts stopped on a groom, and the twins ended with 3,245 and 2,854 damage taken, a gap of 12% of the larger. The game's test player controls the hero.

The twins speak in turn, the bride first and the widow answering: “Something old, something new...” “...something dead. You.” over the title card, “Dance with me.” “Forever.” at each First Dance, “My love, you came!” “You came back!” as the grooms arrive, and “Till death...” “...do us part.” at their fall. Boss voices in Settings controls the audio.

Bouquet and Wreath

From the pull, every 4 s, the bride tosses her bouquet and the widow her wreath at the same moment, onto one spot near you. The bride's half warns of the disc the bouquet strikes, 2.2 m across the middle; the widow's half warns of the ring round it, out to 4 m, that the wreath strikes. Each half shows only its own shape, and the two together are one target: a full circle 4 m out. They fly for 1.5 s. Anywhere inside takes 20% physical, once a throw, so walk out past the outer edge of the ring, whichever half the warning is in.

Bouquet and Wreath: the disc on the left and the ring on the right are one target.

Flower Petals and Mourning Charge (from 80%)

Every 10 s both twins pick one hero. In the bride's half a strip of the floor over that hero warns for 1 s, then petals fall on it for 3 s, 10% physical each second. In the widow's half a 2 m lane from her through the hero warns for 1 s; she screams and charges along it for 20% physical, and stays where it ends. A hero who stands still is struck in both halves, 30 and 20. Walk out of the strip and the lane together.

Flower Petals and Mourning Charge: the strip on the left, the charge lane on the right.

First Dance and Last Waltz (from 60%)

Every 15 s the bride says “Dance with me.” and both twins glide to a spot of their own beside one hero. Each one's ring, 1.8 m round her, warns for 1 s; then she dances in it for 3 s, the bride twirling and the widow waltzing, striking everyone inside for 15% physical each second. A hero who stands still is usually inside both rings. Walk out of both. A roll dodges one strike and immunity two, never all three. Nothing else is cast while they dance, so it is a good moment to hit them both.

First Dance and Last Waltz: a ring in each half; stand outside both.

Visitors (from 40%)

Wedding guests walk the whole floor in a line, a couple to each of ten lanes, half the lanes left empty. In the bride's half the living come from one side; in the widow's half ghosts come from the other, filling exactly the lanes the living left empty, and the lines cross in the middle. The side changes every cast. Each half warns of its own lanes for 2 s, then the lines walk at 2.4 m/s. A line that reaches you strikes once for 30% physical, so standing still always takes one hit. The line that starts on your side of the middle reaches you first. Wait well away from the middle, in a hole of that line; when it has passed, step across into a hole of the second. A roll or blink through a line also works. It comes again 8 s after the lines have left the floor.

Visitors: the warned lanes in one half are the holes in the other.

Grooms (from 20%)

The grooms join, a living groom at the bride's side and a skeletal one at the widow's; if guests are still walking, they arrive once the lines have passed. From then on every spell the twins cast is cast again by the grooms 2 s later, from where they stand, aimed afresh, with its own warning: the living groom echoes the bride, the skeletal one the widow. So every warning comes twice: clear the twins' shape, then look for the grooms'. The grooms are immune and solid: a cast aimed at a twin with a groom in its way stops on him and shows IMMUNE.

Grooms: the skeletal groom's wreath of bones repeats the widow's throw.

Achievements

Besides the shared no-damage and Blind Faith achievements (the no-damage one is called Not a Hair Out of Place on this boss, and the film earns it), the trial has two challenges of its own. The film earns neither, and their pictures are still to come.

Third Wheel
Defeat the Bride and the Widow without a single cast stopping on either groom.

Sharing is Caring
Defeat the Bride and the Widow with the damage each has taken within 10% of the other's.

For Third Wheel, before each cast from 20% on, step so neither groom stands between you and the twins: a cast stopped by a groom in either half breaks it. For Sharing is Caring, the gap between the two twins' damage taken must be no more than 10% of the larger at the kill. Cast from where your casts reach both twins, since a cast that reaches both deals the same to each; the tracker shows Bride N% / Widow N%. All of them: Achievements.

Tips

  • Read both halves: the bride's half shows only her shapes and the widow's only hers.
  • Bouquet and Wreath is one circle 4 m out. Leaving the disc is not enough; walk past the ring.
  • Stand where your casts reach both twins: each one then hits the shared pool twice.
  • Hit them hardest while they dance, from outside both rings: nothing else is cast then.
  • Against the Visitors, start far from the middle: the further out you wait, the longer the gap between the two lines.
  • From 20%, count two seconds after every warning for the grooms' echo.
  • In a party, Bouquet and Wreath throws one pair onto each hero, while Petals and Charge and First Dance each pick one hero at random.
