A small room of chapter 2. When you walk in, the room card reads: The teaching lectern rolls back across the service hatch.

Chapter 2, first upper floor. Take the Teaching court and conservatory's west arch; the workshop is the first room, and its south passage leads on to the Cable winding room. Where its carriage is left matters to the court's enclosure gate (see watch).
What is wrong
"The teaching lectern rolls back across the service hatch." The Carriage's card: "The roller lectern sits at the foot of its sloping rail, across the service hatch; left free, it rolls back down to there." The Strip's card: "A stone strip under the brake shoe, glazed smooth with wear; a shoe dragging on it barely slows."
What you can work
- Carriage
- The roller lectern carriage on its sloping return rail.
- Shoe
- A broad brake shoe that its parking lever lowers onto the stone strip.
- Strip
- The stone strip under the shoe, glazed smooth with wear.
- Hatch
- The service hatch set in the back wall; it opens only with the carriage clear and still.
Solution
A nudge
The glazed strip gives the shoe almost no purchase. Grip surface lays a rough mat on it. The mat does nothing until the shoe is lowered onto it, so you can prepare it first.
The full solution
Other ways that work
- Draw, then the Shoe, then Grip surface (the test route's order) also works if you are quick. With the shoe down on bare glazed stone, the carriage starts creeping back about a second after the pull ends.
- Anchor (Growth + Growth + Water) on the Carriage once it has reached the stone bearing pad at the very end of the rail: "Roots join the base to the contacting stone pad." Too early it answers "The carriage has not reached the stone bearing pad."
- Handle the Carriage instead of casting Draw: a hand haul moves it the same way.
- A Stilling ward (Wind + Will + Will) cast with the Carriage under the crosshair while it is in the bay makes its roll back very slow, which gives you time to set the shoe.
Watch for
- Enclosure rule: the court's enclosure gate needs the carriage at the stone bearing pad, the very end of the rail. That is farther than this room needs to settle. If the shoe went down early and the carriage stopped short, Handle the Shoe to lift it, Draw again, and lower the shoe at the end. Keep it there until the gate has risen.
- Slick surface on the Strip works against you: "A slick film lowers friction beneath the moving shoe." Grip surface replaces it.
- Once the shoe and mat hold it, Draw is refused: "The carriage strains, but the parking shoe bites on the traction mat and holds it."
- Before it is clear and still: "The moving carriage still crosses the hatch opening."
- Do not stand on the rail; the carriage stops against you.
- The Reading lamp (Handle it, or Heat it) and the Reading shutter (Handle or Orient it) stand in every room. They only light the room to read by and work none of its fittings.
If it goes wrong
- This room has no failed state. To put it back as you found it, hold R for one second (pad: Start, then Restart from autosave); that reloads the autosave made when you entered the room. An unheld carriage simply rolls back over the hatch; Draw it again.
Achievements here
- Lantern Slides: Solve the Projection workshop.
- Second Thoughts: Second Thoughts (aimed): Slick surface on the Strip, then Grip surface on it within twenty seconds. Harmless as long as Grip is the last one cast.
